Miami Law's oldest and largest advocacy program trains students in brief writing and oral argument. Members compete against top law schools in national competitions. The Board ranked 3rd in the nation and #1 in Florida for 2025–2026. Second- and third-year students earn a spot through the fall John T. Gaubatz Competition.

The International Moot Court Board, part of Miami Law's International Moot Court Program, gives students the chance to represent the University of Miami School of Law in moot court competitions across the country and around the world, while obtaining course credit. This organization is ideal for students interested in pursuing careers in international law, or otherwise hoping to improve their legal research, writing, and advocacy skills. Also, though it is not required, participation in the International Moot Court Board student organization is a great way to prepare for the International Moot Court Program. 

Examples of past competitions students have participated in include: The International Criminal Court Trial Competition in The Hague, The Netherlands; the Moot Madrid competition in Madrid, Spain; the UBA Moot Competition in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the William C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Competition in Vienna, Austria; the International Human Rights Competition in Washington, D.C.; the Frankfurt Investment Moot Court Competition in Frankfurt, Germany; and the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Washington, D.C.

The Yvette Ostolaza Mock Trial Team provides opportunities for students to hone their advocacy skills and develop as trial attorneys. The Trial Team is composed of a select group of students who represent Miami Law in interscholastic civil and criminal competitions against other law schools. 

At tournaments, teams consist of two, three, or four members who actively compete in each trial. Each competition features a case file selected by the tournament host’s governing body. Team members prepare by reviewing legal documents, witness statements, and physical evidence. Over the course of each competition round, each team argues motions, delivers opening statements, conducts direct and cross examinations, and delivers closing arguments. Miami Law’s team is coached by a select group of trial attorneys, judges and professors. In addition, guest judges and lawyers are also invited from the law school and local legal community to offer fresh perspectives during the development of the case.

The University of Miami Inter-American Law Review (IALR) is devoted to providing a forum through which legal scholars, practitioners, and students discuss major international and inter-American legal and legally-related developments. IALR is recognized as the only student-run periodical to focus solely on legal issues which directly affect Latin America and the Caribbean. With the continuing emergence of Miami as a center of international trade, finance, and law, the focus of IALR becomes increasingly important and relevant to the surrounding environs.

Founded in 2007, the University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review, formerly known as the Black Law Review, is a student journal committed to the promotion and publication of scholarly articles that address the legal, social, economic, and psychological issues that affect communities of color, with a particular emphasis on the global Black community.

Founded in 1947 as the Miami Law Quarterly, the University of Miami Law Review is a quarterly legal journal committed to publishing articles of interest to legal scholars and practitioners. Composed of four separate issues published in the Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer, the Law Review publishes one volume per year. One issue consists of pieces analyzing the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals (fittingly named the Eleventh Circuit Issue). In addition this law review hosts an annual symposium bringing distinguished scholars to campus to participate in engaging discussion.

The Honor Council is a group of 24 second-year and third-year students who promote the Honor Code’s mission of creating an atmosphere of honesty and intellectual integrity.  In addition, the Honor Council investigates and adjudicates alleged violations of the Honor Code. 

Each member of the Council is elected by their classmates at the end of their first year for a two-year term of service on the Council.  Members work to create awareness of the integrity issues that face students in law school and refer students to resources that aid in dealing with those issues as they arise. 

Serving on the Honor Council is a wonderful leadership opportunity where members are entrusted by their classmates, the faculty, and the administration to faithfully uphold the Honor Code and its principles.

The Inter-Club Council (ICC) is an advisory council to the Student Bar Association (SBA). The ICC is made up of executive members of student organizations. This group of student leaders coordinate the activities on campus with the workings of the administrative counterparts.

The Law Activity Fee Allocation Committee, which has jurisdiction over the activity fees paid by law students, evaluates proposals submitted by various student organizations and allocates funds to meritorious projects.

Miami Law's Ambassador Program is an invaluable extension of the Office of Admissions. Each year, selected students serve as ambassadors, leading campus tours and representing Miami Law at recruitment events. Ambassadors volunteer a few hours per month to support both on-campus and off-campus outreach. In addition to sharing information about Miami Law, ambassadors also offer insight into their experiences as law students. Miami Law’s team of ambassadors represents the broad range of backgrounds, experiences, undergraduate institutions, academic majors, and legal interests that shape our community.

• Attend a mandatory, one-time training session

The Student Bar Association is the governing body for University of Miami School of Law students and acts as a liaison between the administration and students. The SBA is controlled by the Senate and the Executive Board, which are elected by the student body. The Senate is governed by 1L, 2L, and 3L representatives. The Executive Board is comprised of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, ABA Representative, and Historian. Alexander Hamilton Society is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting constructive debate on basic American principles and contemporary issues in economics, statecraft, foreign policy, and national security.

The primary purpose of the ABA Representative is to advocate on behalf of ABA Law Student Division members at their school, serve as the school’s point person on the ABA and the Law Student Division, to promote the ABA and Law Student Division, and to communicate the benefits and value of ABA membership at their school. The success of the Division depends on the involvement and commitment of ABA representatives. This is especially critical when issues relating to legal education and legal education standards are up for review and comment. The Division relies on the Reps and the SBAs to relay this information to their fellow law students and to provide the Division with input on behalf of their school.

Miami Law students will find many benefits to engaging with the ABA while in law school, whether for professional networking, learning about many substantive areas of the law, and for the benefits offered including well-being resources.

The Artificial Intelligence and Law Society aims to educate law students, faculty, and professionals on the impacts and implications of AI in legal practice, including ethical regulatory, and technological concerns. The Child Advocacy Family Law Society works to engage current University of Miami School of Law students in child advocacy through rewarding experiences with Miami youth and families whether it be tutoring young individuals released from detention, tutoring other inner-city youths at risk of offending, or helping refugee families readjust to life in the United States. The Criminal Law Society is dedicated to the universal ideals of justice and fairness that encompass our society by way of the law. The mission of the Cuban American Bar Association (CABA), University of Miami School of Law Student Chapter (hereinafter “University of Miami School of Law CABA”), is to promote membership in the Cuban American Bar Association among current students at the University of Miami School of Law. What is the Dean's Cup? The Dean's Cup Competition is an annual event held between the University of Miami School of Law and the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. It comprises over 25 events ranging from traditional sports such as basketball, soccer, and softball to other sports such as darts and bowling. Most events have both men's and women's teams and, in some cases, multiple squads (Football has a Men's A, B, C & D team). Each event counts for a specific number of points, and the winner takes all! At the end of the week, the school with the most points takes home the Cup!

Founded in the Spring of 2021, the Disability Law Student Association (DLSA) is dedicated to advancing disability justice, accessibility, and inclusion within the legal profession and on the Miami Law campus. The Entertainment and Sports Law Society (ESLS) empowers students to explore and pursue careers in the entertainment, arts, and sports law industries by supplementing classroom learning with real-world experiences, mentorship, and networking opportunities. Through educational programming, professional engagement, and our annual national conference, ESLS cultivates a championship mindset and prepares future legal leaders to thrive in a dynamic and competitive field.

The entertainment and sports fields in Miami and throughout the country hold many opportunities for law school graduates. The University of Miami School of Law boasts a unique blend of both subject-specific and broader courses that prepare its students for employment in these fields. The Entertainment and Sports Law Society (ESLS) seeks to supplement the classroom education provided at UM Law with real-world experiences in the entertainment and sports law fields. The purpose of the Entertainment and Sports Law Society is to educate and inform students about the realities of practicing in the entertainment and sports law fields.

We seek to provide our members with an insight into various avenues available to them as practicing attorneys, whether that is representation of entertainment and sports figures and entities, practicing in a law firm with an entertainment or sports division, or work within a major sporting league. We also hosted the first Entertainment and Sports Law Society Conference in 1997 and continue to host this annual event. Since then, the Conference has grown into a full-scale event where law students and professionals take part in a forum to discuss current legal issues in sports, entertainment, intellectual property, the arts, and the media.

Fashion Law Society was created to bring together a group of law students who are interested in the fashion industry. Law schools and the legal profession are currently strongly dominated by a form of orthodox liberal ideology which advocates a centralized and uniform society. While some members of the academic community have dissented from these views, by and large they are taught simultaneously with (and indeed as if they were) the law. The Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies is a group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the current state of the legal order. It is founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. The Society seeks both to promote an awareness of these principles and to further their application through its activities. This entails reordering priorities within the legal system to place a premium on individual liberty, traditional values, and the rule of law. It also requires restoring the recognition of the importance of these norms among lawyers, judges, law students, and professors. In working to achieve these goals, the Society has created a conservative and libertarian intellectual network that extends to all levels of the legal community.

First-Generation Law Association (FGLA) offers support to students who identify as first-generation law students. This includes law students who are the first in their family to attend college or first to attend professional school. We strive to provide a safe and inclusive community for Miami Law students who lack access to generational knowledge of the legal field. We aim to facilitate discussions surrounding common questions first-generation students may have through workshops and events designed and led by our fellow FGLA peers. More than anything, FGLA aims to show you, a first-generation law student, that there are others who have felt the same things you are feeling and found success in law school. We are a community dedicated to doing anything we can to support each other in life and career.

Miami Mindfulness is working to enhance the law school experience by helping students establish wellness practices that can lead to greater academic and professional success.  

MM is bringing ancient wisdom to the professional environment in a revolutionary way.  By making mindful practices accessible to all types of personalities, law students at UM can benefit from mental clarity and emotional and physical wellness that can be achieved through a few simple practices (such as awareness of the present moment and deep breathing). 

Miami Mindfulness is a part of the University of Miami's Mindfulness in Law Program, the Institute for Mindful Studies, and is also supported by the Dade County Bar Association's Mindfulness in Law Task Force.

The Intellectual Property Law Society (IPLS) at the University of Miami School of Law is dedicated to fostering student engagement with the dynamic and evolving field of intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Our mission is to promote education, professional development, and networking by connecting students with practitioners, alumni, and faculty through events, workshops, and mentorship opportunities. The International Law Society is a member of the National International Law Students Association. The International Law Society is an organization of students who are dedicated to the promotion of international law. We provide students with opportunities to study, research, and network in the international legal arena. The Miami chapter acts as a liaison between students and professionals interested in international law. Also, it sponsors speakers and public discussions on various aspects of public and private international law and international relations. The purpose of the International Law Society shall be to recognize and encourage scholastic excellence, provide service to the college and community, provide opportunities to develop leadership skills and the spirit of goodwill among its members in the context of furthering opportunities to learn and experience issues in the study of international law.

The Jewish Comparative Law Society (JCLS) is a representative body for Jewish students at the University of Miami School of Law. The Executive Board is responsible for planning social, educational, and religious events of interest to all students. Our group prides itself on bringing people from a variety of backgrounds together to celebrate Jewish culture and heritage, and all of our events are open to the entire law school community.

The Maritime Law Society was founded in 1987 to serve as a forum where students, professors, and alumni could discuss maritime related issues as well as to participate in the Miami’s vast maritime culture. Miami Wellness Collective is dedicated to supporting the overall health and well-being of law students. Our mission is to create a welcoming community where students can connect, recharge, and prioritize wellness amid the demands of law school. Miami Law Women is the law student division of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers (FAWL) at the University of Miami School of Law. Miami Law Women is an organization that encompasses students with similar beliefs and goals for the advancement of women in the legal profession. We are an organization devoted to community service, networking, and social programming both within the law school as well as throughout the community. Networking events are a major part of MLW’s success, ranging from panels comprised of attorneys and professors to networking opportunities created for our members. The Military and Veteran Law Student Association (MVLSA) is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive community for all students, military-affiliated and civilian alike through education, outreach and advocacy. The National Lawyers Guild is the nation’s oldest and largest progressive bar association and was the first one in the US to be racially integrated. Its mission is to use law for the people: uniting lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers to function as an effective force in the service of the people by valuing human rights over property interests. As a law student chapter of the NLG, we partner with the local South Florida chapter, with other law student chapters, and with the national organization to work for basic change in the structure of our political and economic system. The NLG aims to bring together all those who recognize the importance of safeguarding and extending the rights of workers, women, LGBTQ people, farmers, people with disabilities, and people of color, upon whom the welfare of the entire nation depends; those who seek actively to eliminate racism; those who work to maintain and protect our civil rights and liberties in the face of persistent attacks upon them; and those who look upon the law as an instrument for the protection of the people, rather than for their repression. Phi Alpha Delta is a legal professional fraternity composed of students, attorneys, judges and educators worldwide. With over 250,000 living members across the world, therefore, approximately one in six attorneys is a member.

We are dedicated to promoting professional competency, service and achievement within the legal profession. PAD bridges the gap between undergraduate work and law school and law school and the practice of law. The Public Interest Leadership Board (PILB) provides an opportunity for dedicated students to play a key role in fostering the public interest mission at the School of Law. It is a student-run leadership board comprised of a dynamic group of Miami Law students dedicated to public service, including, but not limited to, HOPE Summer Fellows, project leaders and Miami Public Interest Scholars. The Real Property, Probate, and Trust Law (RPPTL) Society is Miami Law’s all-encompassing organization for students interested in real estate, probate, and trust law. Our mission is to spark student interest in these fields while providing meaningful opportunities for professional growth.

We focus on a wide range of practice areas, including real estate transactions, development, trusts & estates, probate, construction, finance, and hospitality. Through our close connection with the Florida Bar’s RPPTL Section, the RPD LLM and Estate Planning LLM programs, and the local legal community, members gain access to extensive networking and educational opportunities.

RPPTL hosts lectures with prominent practitioners, sponsors hands-on workshops to sharpen practical skills, and provides a forum for students to discuss contemporary issues in real property, probate, and trust law. By fostering relationships with attorneys and industry leaders, RPPTL helps prepare students for careers in these dynamic areas of practice.

The Society of Bar and Gavel is made up of exceptional students who have shown commitment above and beyond what is required of any law student. Established in 1949, the Society of Bar and Gavel is the only honors society specifically dedicated to recognizing law students who demonstrate outstanding service and dedication to goodwill. The St. Thomas More Society is the association for Catholic students at Miami Law. Membership is open to anyone interested in learning about Catholic perspectives on legal questions and social issues. Our goal is to provide students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to explore the Catholic faith through intellectual discussion, social events, service projects, liturgy, and prayer. Periodically, we hold "Mass reviews" at any of a number of Miami-area parishes, followed by brunch. We draw on the area's rich resources to invite distinguished Catholic thinkers from the University and beyond to discuss contemporary problems and issues relevant to the Law School community. As our name indicates, we celebrate and honor the traditional connection between Catholic theology and legal scholarship.

SALDF is dedicated to providing a forum for education, advocacy, and scholarship aimed at protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system and raising the profile of the field of animal law.
