Intensive compact, short course offerings enable students to take a course in a particular area of law in an intensive format. Additionally, these compact course offerings allow the law school to bring some of the best and brightest professors and practitioners to Miami Law.
Registration
Students can register for a compact course during the regular registration period or until the first day of the course, provided it has not reached enrollment capacity. However, due to the compact duration of these courses, students cannot enroll if they miss the first class meeting. They are permitted to drop the course by the second class session. Any compact course dropped after the deadline will result in a W for withdrawn grade. The W signifies that you attended but has no impact on a student's GPA.

Q: What is the drop process for compact courses?
A: Compact courses, ranging from 1 to 2 weeks in duration, can be dropped by the second class session. However, compact courses exceeding 2 weeks in length can be dropped by the second week. Any compact course dropped after the deadline will result in a W for withdrawn grade. The W signifies that you attended but has no impact on a student's GPA.
Q: What if a compact course is full? Is there a waiting list similar to the one used for other courses?
A: Yes, if a compact course is full there will be a waiting list similar to other courses.

A: There is no set limit as to how many compact courses a student may take so long as they fulfill their other graduation requirements.
Q: When are compact courses offered?
A: Typically, throughout the semester period during the lunch hour. Usually Friday afternoon or weekend meetings will be required. Please refer to the course description booklet for specific course schedules and check updates.
Q: Do compact courses have a separate grading scale?
A: No, compact courses are graded in the same manner as other upper level law school course offerings.
Q: Can these compact courses be taken Honors/Pass/Fail?
A: compact courses are not offered Pass/Fail.
Q: Can the compact courses satisfy a writing or skills requirement?
A: Not generally. Exceptions may apply for certain two credit compact courses. Please check course description booklet.
Q: What is the method of evaluation for compact courses?
A: Like all other courses offered by the law school there may be an examination, a paper, a presentation, or several compact assignments. The method of evaluation is at the professor’s discretion and will be described in the course description booklet.
Q: When are exams, papers, and presentations due for the compact courses?
A: Typically the examination or presentation will be given near the end of the course meeting times. On the other hand, a course graded solely on a paper may be due compactly after the course ends or some professors allow for the paper to be handed in by semester’s end. Please note due dates are at the professor’s discretion.
Q: Given that these courses only meet for a compact period of time what is the attendance policy for these courses?
A: Due to the small number of meetings, attendance to all meetings/classes for compact courses is mandatory. Students who miss more than one class session (70 minute) of a 1-credit compact course are subject to administrative withdrawal and will have a W for the course on their transcripts.
